This leads to “wetting out”, where the outer fabric absorbs water, feels heavy and damp and compromises comfort and usability. Replacement becomes increasingly relevant when reduced waterproofing is accompanied by leakage, clamminess, water seepage or structural issues such as torn membranes and peeling seams that prevent the garment from guaranteeing reliable waterproof protection.

However, reduced waterproofing does not always require immediate replacement. In many cases, performance can be restored through maintenance actions such as cleaning with a technical cleaner, applying spray-on or wash-in treatments and using heat to reactivate the DWR coating. Replacement is typically only necessary when these restoration steps fail and the garment continues to allow moisture through during play. At that point, reduced waterproofing shifts from a maintenance issue to a usability problem, making replacement essential to restore dryness, comfort and dependable performance on the golf course.
